Before any vehicle can be registered in Europe it must be type approved. That is to say, that it must meet criteria laid down by EEC Directives governing a number of features, of which brakes, emissions, drive-by noise and smoke are probably the best known. There are numerous such directives, the majority of which are adequately covered by C & U Regs. Uk authorities apply C & U wherever possible but apply the directives that are not completely covered by C & U. Those mentioned being the most notable

It follows that when modifications are made to a vehicle, consideration must be given to their effect on the original type approval. For our part, we have to ensure that the modified vehicle still meets all the criteria laid down. Whilst it is possible to argue that another axle raises the noise level and that modifying an exhaust may affect the level of emissions, in practice our Vehicle Standards Authority sees the braking system as the area most affected by the modifications and it is in connection with this that we base most of our activities at SvTech.

We are called upon to ensure that a vehicle or trailer conforms to all requirements of 71/320/EEC (as amended by 98/12/EC and Reg. 13/ECE as regards braking systems and performance) and, we have to certify this to the VOSA, a Government Agency responsible to the Department of Transport.

Our customer base extends from vehicle manufacturers, specifically Iveco Ford UK, Mercedes Benz UK, MAN, Volvo, Isuzu, through truck convertors to major fleet operators and truck dealers.
